Rant: I hate the Forum Home, it sucks.

I'm having issue with getting google adsense working on my site. I don't have the time and patience to mess with adsense anymore. I even tried applying for media.net and got rejected. At this point I don't care what google thinks about my content, but only that Google Authorship works for members Google + profiles and if removing the word forum is one of the short cuts I have to get it to work then so be it.
What's the reason that they're denying you? I have it on my site but I just show it to guests and only in threads.

I used to have it working but I took ads off at some point earlier this year and made it private.

Now my site's public again, I'm on a new server and unable to get ads to show. When I asked Google Adsense, this was their answer:

(BTW I don't understand any of this because my board url is http://8thos.com I don't have https:// hardcoded anywhere on my site.)

1. Ads are placed on an IP address URL or a page protected by Secure Socket Layer (SSL).

We do not serve ads to IP URLs or pages protected by SSL. Example IP URLs are: http://127.0.0.1/myhome.php orhttp://[2001:db8:0:1]:80. You can identify a page protected by SSL if the URL starts with "https://" instead of "http://".

2. Ad targeting issues

Sometimes we have trouble matching relevant, highly-targeted ads to a publisher’s content. This usually happens when publishers have too little text content on their pages. As you may know, the AdSense crawler cannot decipher images or Flash content and struggles with content hosted within an iframe. However, on the My ads tab in your AdSense account, you can configure alternate ads to show instead of blank spaces. For instructions on implementing alternate ads, please see this Help Center article.

We constantly strive to improve our online resources and the automated support we provide to our publishers. If our troubleshooter and this reply did not address your query please accept our apologies and let us know about it in the survey we'll send you in a few days. You may also post your question on the AdSense Help Forum.

We appreciate your cooperation.

Sincerely,

The Google AdSense Team

Except that its not really a homepage. (unless your website hosts articles only)
A widget based portal with the above functionality included would be nice.

This would be a nice design for a Forum Home. [source]

Anyone who has added special images to their forum node icons looks the same as that one.
True. Sort Of.

I guess I liked small description under the Title and moving the "Discussions: 81 Messages 226" to the right.

I only included it in this thread because even the relatively small changes were improvements on the typical forum home.

I like Lithium, although all Lithium communities are heavily customised for each company:

It contains a lot of info, and is long, but has some good features and modules.

Thats Spotify's community by the way...

Obviously, Lithium is super expensive and is in a different league, but still ;)

The biggest issue I believe with changing the layout would be having something that not only works on a PC screen but also a mobile phone and tablet

New forum I just saw for the first time: NodeBB.
I like the simple title plus columns approach to their forum home.

I'd say their forum home is much better than most ! Great start.

Recent version announcement - http://try.nodebb.org/topic/108/nodebb-v007-released

It's different, granted. Different as I have always said doesn't make it better or more practical than a currently sound layout.

  1. Forum statistics are huge (Too big)
  2. Who made the last post in the respected areas?
I agree with you though that "it's a start", being a great start I would disagree with you on. Everything is just too big.

The Forum Home on NodeBB looks great on a mobile device.
It has just two columns and almost looks identical.
It is definitely better than stock xenforo on a mobile device.

That forum index is completely pointless.

Big deal, it has bright coloured squares.
Might as well just have a series of links to the forums for all the information it conveys.

With that layout, I find it very easy to find categories I would want to read/post in. I wouldn't say that's useless. It definitely does away with a lot of useless information that other software loads on the main page.

Anyone else notice how fast it loads?
