Development Update, May 2011

It's about time for a development update around here. There has been lots going on, and there is much to tell.

XenForo 1.0.2

It's about time for a release, so all the bug fixes to date will be packaged up and released as XenForo 1.0.2 sometime next week. This will be another painless upgrade for all XenForo customers.

But I'm sure you want to know about more interesting stuff, so, coming soon...

XenForo 1.1

This will be the first release of major new features since XenForo 1.0. There are lots of things going in, some of which we have hinted at in posts around the forum. There are also a few things that we had originally slated for 1.1 that will now be pushed back to a later release in favour of getting 1.1 out sooner with an array of completed features.

Here are a few features that will be in XenForo 1.1:
  • Right-to-left layout mode for Arabic (etc.) language support
  • Thread prefixes, definable at a per-forum and a per-user group basis
  • Warnings for trouble-making users
  • Ability for members to ignore other members
  • Custom user profile fields
  • Daily statistics
  • Admin CP search
  • Improved admin and moderator logging
  • Additional thread viewing permissions
  • Criteria-based user group promotions
  • A notice system to display messages to your users in certain circumstances
This is not an exhaustive list. We will expand the feature list over time, but some improvements may be a surprise with the release itself.

We will be detailing many of the features of XenForo 1.1 over time via the Have You Seen...? forum.

XenForo 1.1 will be released this Summer.

Big-Board Search

While XenForo's MySQL FullText search system is suitable for the majority of our customers, MySQL can struggle to sort results with boards that regularly return very large search results.

For these boards, we will be offering a new add-on search product that will be both fast and scalable. This solution will require an additional process running on your server, so is likely to be of interest only to customers running their own dedicated servers.

In tests so far, our custom solution has returned results from a five-million post database up to twenty-times faster than XenForo using MySQL FullText.

Furthermore, the custom solution makes use of the XenForo search framework, so any add-ons that you have installed that make their content searchable through the XenForo search framework will automatically be searchable with the custom solution too.

Resource Manager

We have been talking for a long time about a proper solution to replace the current Resource Forums. I'm happy to reveal that we have been working on this system, and its first phase is almost ready to roll out.

The resource manager will support uploading multiple versions of resources, rating for each version, a means to run a form of blog with your resource together with a facility for uploading screenshots etc. Resources are searchable, watchable, likeable and all the other things one would expect from an official XenForo add-on.

While we will run the resource manager on XenForo.com alone initially, as it matures we will offer it as an add-on product to our customers.

Here is a very rudimentary teaser:
