Adsense crisis

The funny thing is that I had wanted to make an advertising platform for years, but what made me get around to building it one weekend 3 years ago was when I got banned temporarily/accidentally from AdSense and was just super annoyed we had to deal with AdSense accidentally banning us every few years... hah

So AdSense banning us on accident that time might have been the best thing to ever happen to me. :)

Jul 25 @ 2:30 pm – One thing that I learned from this is you shouldn’t be dependent on something that ultimately you have no control over. So I built an in-house advertising system that we are going to start using here.

I do remember reading that and your Digital Point Advertisement Manager has a larger network than a locally hosted Advertisement Manager than what Daniel's making but the main reason I want one locally is so that my members can pay for advertisements themselves so they can advertise their work.

Yeah... while they could of course sign up on digitalpoint.com to run ads on a specific publisher site, it definitely would be "cleaner" to be able to do it from the site itself.

One day when I have a bunch of free time, I'd like to make a system where there's a backend API to give people an interface for their users without leaving their site. But yeah... I also have about 10,000 other things to do as well. :)

I had thought about making my system a totally installable system, but it was just seeming like it was going to end up being a support nightmare... It requires custom compiled PHP for some non-standard math functions, it has a backend daemon that runs on the server to help with long running processes (like compiling keyword lists for sites), requires GeoIP extensions, uses an *absurd* amount of database space (since it's logging every impression completely), etc. So could only be used on sites with at least a VPS... Our system also isn't specific to just run on one *type* of site... works on XF, vB, MyBB, WordPress, etc. for the advanced functions or any site you can put JS on for just standard banner ads. So you also end up with how do you deploy the backend with various different frameworks.

In the end, there was just too many issues and could see it becoming a support nightmare when people don't know how to compile PHP, run a daemon (and keep it running after a server reboot, etc.)

Yes, while my add on will provide some features similar to digital point ads the difference in what you choose to do basically stems down to: do you want a variety of advertisers and send your advertisers to digital points to manage campaigns/add funds, or do you want that to be done on your own site.

Digitalpoint's system is more advanced and has more features, I am not attempting to compete, I'm basically just offering you the ability to run ads in house. At the end of the day, it's going to come down to personal preference. The same reason you'd choose to run adsense over dp ads, or dp ads over adsense, or any other ad solution system.

@digitalpoint I understand fully why your system isn't just downloadable. Most of your products are specifically meant to run on your site. Not to mention that like you said, it wouldn't be capable of running on most systems.

Yep... our system is not ideal for *all* sites for many reasons... It's probably best suited for sites large enough that they have a bunch of advertisers wanting to advertise already. Since it's a bid system, it would be kind of pointless if you end up with 1 person bidding against no one for ad space. :)

In fact, I think a large percent of our publishers don't even run banner ads from our ad system... many just use it for some of the additional ad types (banner ads are just one ad type the system supports). There's currently 4 ad types supported (types, not banner sizes... all banners are a single "type"), and already have plans for 2 more interesting ad types.

Exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Took a couple of appeals but I got it sorted.

- Give them as many hard numbers as possible ("I've checked x pages, removed x content, moved x content to a section with no ads")
- Stick fast threads in a forum with no ad serving (and mention you have done this)
- Mention that your site is moderated 24/7
- Mention that you have strict ToS/rules in place
- If all else fails, http://xenforo.com/community/threads/metamirror.55736/ then download the metamirrorcache folder to your pc and go through its thumbnails

Oh yeah there's definitely too many perverted words in that list as thread titles on my site.

My new Drone forum makes 8X the income of adsense...from Amazon affiliates!

My old forum makes about zero from Amazon affiliates.

Moral of the story. Try some of the amazon affiliate stuff - both with you picking the product and/or them automatically doing it. Run it for a week or two and see if anything happens.

Can somebody create this as addon?
Block/Censor automatically this keywords. (y)
It's not necessary to go that far. From what I understand, they only care about pornographic images on pages matching those keywords, not the keywords themselves.

You have to test when using affiliate marketings - and, it does require more action on the part of the administrator. You have to update the product links when things change - as they often do.

Also, you can push a product harder when it becomes a good deal.

Example, a particular flying machine was reduced in price a LOT recently. So I posted a thread about it (with the affiliate link) as well as used a notice to announce it.

More of a PITA than adsense, but I am making enough already to be worthwhile. In fact, I had to stop the gift certificates from AMAZ and go to bank deposits since I have nothing to buy with my gift certs.

Problem with amazon is that they will not allow any other payouts except gift certs, if you do not live within the US. They would only pay me if I had a US bank account.

Bigger problem with Amazon is that you never know when they'll pull the plug on associates in your state -- so far associates in 11-12 states have gotten the big brushoff from Amazon.

Their return was always marginal anyway -- a steady but minimal return that eventually paid for the time spent installing the ads (I used a lot of product-specific ads that matched a forum's or blog's subject area as well as as general purpose ads) and chipped in towards hosting costs. When they dump everyone in your state, as they did to us a few months ago, it's not worth they effort to remove the ads (they're probably hoping you'll leave them in & give them free clicks that they don't have to pay commissions for) and put them back in at a later point.

I changed certain critical ads to links (gratis) to Barnes & Noble so people can still find the books, but Amazon is gone from my sites ... forever. I don't need any fair weather friends or partners.

Those state problems were due to the legislatures in those states, not to Amazon.....IMHO.

But I agree you cannot put all your eggs in one basket. There are lots of other sites which have affiliate programs and adsense is good on many sites.

As I said before, I always did terrible on Amaz - until my new site, which is bring in $10 a day on it and only $3 on adsense.

That's not true. They pay directly to UK bank accounts as well.
