How to keep users awaiting approval as guest and not automatically be registered

I have admin approval set up for all new users, however when someone registers even without confirming their email they are automatically set as a registered user and as such can access their profile, preferences etc (but with permissions nav links do not work)

Is there a way to keep anyone that hasn't been moderator approved to stay as a guest ?

Have attached screenshot to show what I mean.

A user in a non-valid user state always receives the permissions from the unregistered/unconfirmed group, regardless of the groups they're in. You can adjust the permissions for that group to suit. The most relevant is probably the ability to edit their profile, though you may not want to limit that. Non-valid user profiles aren't visible to normal members anyway.

Note that you can't prevent them from controlling things like preferences or changing their email or password.

You could just disallow editing of profile (or whatever else permissions) for registered users (then you can obviously upgrade with a secondary user group to allow profile editing based on a promotion)

If the main reason is to stop people editing profile until they have posted or otherwise made themselves trustable, this is not really a “workaround” - it’s probably the main way most people deal with the issue of trusting new members and how the system was designed to deal with it
