I think the best way this could be achieved (already been said I guess) is how Dropbox and Gmail do it. After logging into the website it sends a pin code to the Google Authenticator app on your phone which you must type in within a certain amount of time.

Yes that did fix it. What's even more odd about this bug is that after I reverted the change it stayed fixed.

If you use XenUtiles along with all 3 website API's spammers are no threat at all. Since I installed it about 3 months back not 1 spammer has managed to sign up, from around 3,000 sign-up attempts. :)
