Will or why isn't, XenForo is or will be Modular (sp)?

So,

When I look back at the forums I ran in the past, all of the addons, whether they be gallery, or a CMPS, etc, or blog, strangely referenced the index.php of the forums themselves. I'd end up with funky URL's like myblog.com/forums/index.php?=blog&1 to access my blogs. Now, this changed somewhat with the invention of SEO and custom SEO url's, but by nature I never understood why I didn't have a choice about where my addon installs went. I never understood why each addon wasn't abstracted from the core forum software.

What are your thoughts on this, does the XenForo framework support this level of abstraction for future addons, or is this more of like what I used with Vbulletin and other software years ago? I always imagined this kind of abstraction, and configurability would open up more possabilities. Thoughts?
