'What's New' enhancements

I observed that members and visitors to my forum use the what's new link a lot to see latest content. Wouldn't it be a good idea to enhance the 'what's new' experience?

Some of my suggestions are:

• Addition of member profile / avatar / status updates
• Ability to sort threads by popularity / likes etc
• A bolder what's new button
• Option to chose what's new page on sign in

etc etc. You may add to the list.

Only if there's a way to disable what's seen (similar to Ignore What's New by Waindigo). My users would riot if all that was also shown.
