Changing user groups as default registration

Hello. When users register,instead of them being a registered user as default, can I select a different user group?

Hi, I want new members to only view a certain forum on registration.

Utilize a user group promotion. Revoke access to forums for the registered group except those you wish them to see, and Allow it on your upgraded group. You should read the following article:

So revoke the viewing permissions for the Registered user group for the other forums and create a user group promotion to another group which can see them.

You can set the items of permissions of registered user group to Not Set state, then define them in your custom user group.
